What is New Age?

Generally speaking, the New Age is a movement that holds the doctrines of Evolutionary Godhood and Global Unity. It teaches that we are divine in nature and are on a quest to become gods, all the while promoting unity regardless of beliefs. It asserts that all religions are true, everyone is inherently good, and all paths lead to eternal life.

Why is it Important to Discuss the New Age?

Although most Christians would vehemently disagree with the statement above, many Christians are inadvertently accepting parts, if not all of this doctrine. There are many sub-doctrines that fall under New Age that are creeping their way into the church undetected. For example, no one would ever say that positive thinking is bad, however, when you see how the New Age movement teaches positive thinking as a powerful manifestation tool, things become problematic. More on this later.

God says through his Word in 2 Peter 2:1-3 that, “false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed. And in their greed, they will exploit you with false words.” This was true to the original audience back then and it’s still true today. We must ask ourselves two questions. 1. What are destructive heresies? 2. How are we to recognize them? Throughout this series on “New Age in the Church” we will discover through Scripture how to answer these questions.

Secretly Introduced

Most alarming about 2 Peter 2:1-3 is that these destructive heresies are introduced secretly. They are not obvious. They are insidious, gradual, subtle and very harmful. In Ephesians 6:11, God’s word instructs us to always have the armor of God on so that we can stand against the schemes of the devil. The sad part is, many Christians in America have taken off their armor. As a church, our guard is down. Many are unprepared and apathetic. 1 John 4:1 says “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.” Many of us in the church, myself included have done the exact opposite; we first assume the best of any “Christian” teaching and we might question it later. This approach has allowed so many false teachings into the Body of Christ. Our hope is to bring attention to the deception that is happening. At the root of this New Age movement is narcissism and self-worship, sneaking in under the guise of Christianity. Church, we need to get our armor back on.
